I've installed the MIM 2016 Eval directly on SQL 2012 SP2 some days ago, with no issues.

I think you have another issue, so have a look at the install logs.

Hello, was it same box install? I keep getting that error above on sql 2012 sp2 (11.00.5058) on the same box, and I just tried on SP1 (11.00.3153) on a different box = same thing

Sorry forgot that, yes it was a fresh deployment on a Server 2012 R2 virtual machine.
